Human beings are comprised of body and soul. The heart acts as a window between the earthly and the heavenly realms. In Islam, the heart has always been regarded as an organ of intelligence, capable of understanding.In order to achieve salvation in the Hereafter, the heart must be purified from spiritual blemishes. According to the Islamic approach, the mind and heart, body and soul all work in unison, not independently of each other.
The first step towards strengthening the spiritual heart is to contemplate the purpose of our creation, our relationship to God, our accountability to God on the Day of Judgment and the ways we can rectify our self, by focusing on the condition of our hearts.
